This is the most recent technique and is a combination of microsurgery and laser. Like the other methods, the treatment takes place under local anaesthetic with eye drops. With the help of a microkeratom (an electrical driven tiny knife) a small flap is cut free at the front side of the cornea. This flap will be turned over after which a thin layer of cornea tissue will be evaporated by the excimer laser.

The advantages of LASIK in comparison to the other techniques are as follow:

  • there is little postoperative pain
  • generally a quick recovery of the sharpness of sight
  • there is no, or very few haze, blurred cicatrisation of the cornea

What risks are characteristic to this technique?

  • Risks that are associated to the excision of the corneal flap: displacement, deposit of material on the flap, the growing in of the epithelial cells, melting of the flap
  • risks that are associated to the use of the micro keratome: insufficient excisions, too deep, too superficial or irregular excisions, a free flap.

In a next step, the flap will be replaced on its original spot and aspirates itself. There is no need of suturing. As this laser treatment occurred under the flap, there is no visible wound at the exterior and no post surgical pain so to speak.

With a more personalized laser treatment, or zyoptix, higher abnormalities can be corrected in some cases especially with patients who have big pupils. Even more complex irregularities can be treated additionally. This treating method can be applied by PRK, LASEK or LASIK technique. In these specific cases, it leads to a better picture quality with a minimal loss of contrast sensibility.

LASEK can be an alternative for the LASIK method in case the cornea is too thin or, if for technical reasons, the loosening up with a keratome knife is not possible.
