PRK : this treatment technique is suitable for myopia till –9 dioptre, far-sightedness till +5 dioptre, astigmatism till 5-dioptre average. (For more information regarding this technique click here).

Laser treatment through PRK technique transforms the cornea in a soft way by removing microscopic quantities of tissue from the outer layer with the Excimer laser, a cold, computerized ultra violet ray of light.

This procedure takes only a few seconds and happens in different succeeding phases under local anaesthetic.

What are the advantages?

  • this technique is known and applied broadly since 1984
  • minor surgical risk
  • a quick and little painful intervention
  • does not diminish the mechanical resistance of the eye
  • retouch is possible in case of unsatisfactory result

What are the risks?

  • a possible discrete postoperative pain that is reduced strongly by applying a bandage lens after the treatment
  • there is a possibility that a slight haze occurs during the first week
  • a possibility of haze (a vague cicatrisation of the cornea), associated to a decrease of the refractive effect. In most cases this haze is of transitory nature.

At the end of the treatment there is a wound at the surface of the eye that can cause light pain.

For certain patients painkillers will be necessary though the applied soft bandage lens after the laser treatment softens the complaints and most patients do not experience any problems.

PRK was the first surgical procedure with Excimer treatment of the cornea. Because of the refinement of this technique and the minor risks, this method takes again a prominent position concerning refractive surgery.
